THE COVER LETTER

15/01/2009 - Lu 266 fois
The cover letter is an important job search tool. Its purpose is to attract attention to you and your suitability for the job.

It introduces you and your resume, encourages the employer to read your resume, provides a frame of reference in which your resume will be read and helps you obtain an interview.

The cover letter is just as important as the resume for it creates the atmosphere within which the resume is read. All too often, people destroy their chances for an interview with a poorly written covering letter. Remember, it represents you in your absence. So be positive and objective, use a simple and direct style. The letter should be personalized and addressed to the individual that has the power to hire you. It must be brief (one page) and typed unless the employer requests a manuscript letter. Demonstrate your ability to expose clear and organized thoughts, show interest in the company and distinguish yourself from other applicants. Do not send a standard letter if you do not wish for it to be sent to the recycle bin along with your resume.

Mr. Kelly :

Subject : Administrative Assistant

Globe and Mail, July 5th, 1999

In reviewing the professional / administrative position opportunities advertised this weekend, I noticed that your ad stood out from the others. I am replying with enthusiasm to what appears to be a job made for me.

I exceed your requirements as stated. With over five years of progressively more responsible, directly related work experience with a major law firm, I am able to handle a high volume of diversified office responsibilities with a minimum of supervision. I believe I can contribute significantly to your law practice through my efficient, cost-saving and support oriented approach. I have always enjoyed excellent working relationships at work, as my references state.

I look forward to having an interview.

Yours truly,

Kate Chancellor
