Result : The type of work you are looking for may not be advertised at all in traditional ways. If this is the case, then it is time to start looking harder and deeper.
- Find local organizations : the yellow pages and the business directory are good ways to search for possible nearby work opportunities.
- Contact local organizations : you have a list of potential employers, but you don’t know if they have any job openings. It is time to call a human resources representative.
- Use your network : networking can be your best strategy for finding work. Call everyone you know and tell them that you are looking for work.
- Do a letter-writing campaign : network through personal letters to acquaintances or former co-workers.
- Research potential employers : the information interview can be a useful way to find out more about the kind of industry or company you would like to work for. While this technique is not designed for finding a job, the contacts you make may lead you to a job opening.
- Visit organization Web sites : if you have an organization in mind, visit their home page to see if it has a job-posting section and/or apply in line.
- Join a job-finding club : these clubs provide employment leads and help with résumés, cover letters and interviews. To find your local job-finding club (s): contact your local municipal offices or CLSC. Visit your local Canada Human Resources Centre the local Employment Centre.
- Visit job career fairs : take advantage of these fairs because they represent opportunities to network with people from various organizations and companies that are looking for good candidates.
