Networking: A necessary measure to tap into the « Hidden Job Market »

What is networking?

Networking consists of contacting potential employers directly, in order to get known and to offer your services.
The first goal of networking is not to get a job, but to get into contact with employers or enterprises that might have potential openings or provide job leads. Gather information, ask advice and be aware of any new leads. Doing so, you will enlarge your contact list and you might get to talk to the right person at the right time. Networking also facilitates the first contact as opposed to "cold calls".

What is the hidden job market?

A very important percentage of jobs will never be publicized. This phenomenon is better known as the " Hidden Job Market". Therefore, it is a must for every job seeker to search beyond newspapers, human resources centers, placement agencies or Internet. This more detailed research will give you access to the hidden job market.
Prior to getting involved with discovering the hidden job market you must first:

    * know what jobs are advertised
    * have assessed your skills (write a resume and cover letter)
    * know your target
    * keep an open mind

In order to better your job search through the hidden job market, you must create and utilize your network (personal contacts).
